Extract from "Guide to St Mathew's Church Leyburn, North Yorkshire"
"Outside the church, it may be of interest that the grounds are consecrated land. The first and only burial in this churchyard was of a Mr Peacock in October 1955, some 87 years after the church and churchyard were consecrated. A cemetry can be found in Wensley Road, but this was not opened until 1922, so up to that date all burials took place at Wensley Church as they had always done since time immemorial."

From the same source as above -
"A small claim to fame for the church and town might be that Leyburn is perhaps the only Saxon market town in Great Britain not to have a Parish Church and vicar until 1956!"
