The Notice Board

St. Hilda's is the parish Church for Hinderwell, Port Mulgrave, Runswick Bay, Staithes and Dale House, the graveyard reflects this in the monuments of people from those villages.
The graveyard surrounding the church has a fair number of early 18 Century monuments and lots of 19C monuments.

The inscription on the monument on the left shows that the graveyard was in use before the present church was built.
A local man informed me that he had been told that the graveyard surrounding the church contained two layers of graves.
The access lane to the church splits the graveyard in two and the second area spreads up the hill opposite the church and is extremely large.
